HaHaHa F*&%$# Microsoft!

Sorry I know this is off topic but I am just a bit excited. My PC crashed once again running Microsoft Crap. I am a PC tech so I know how to fix it but I was just sick to death of it. Every time I get it back up and running wondering when it's going to go down again? 3 months 6 months? It seem it goes down at least twice a year if not more.

Any way I have been threatening to go to Linux for years for just that reason and have just been lazy and not done it. Well I had had it so I did a little research and came across an Open Source version of Linux called ubuntu.

I down loaded a copy (it's 100% free) and burned to a CD and was up and running within ten minutes or so just off the CD! In fact I am up and surfing the net right now just running a CD no files loaded on the PC. It's faster then Windows loaded on the hard drive. I will be installing it permanently today I am so done with Microsoft!!!

It even recognized my ATI video card that Windows XP SVPCK 3 or Vista and ME could never seem to figure out no matter what driver I used.

So of you're sick of Microsoft and Windows and all the BS virus scans, spy-ware, security issues, etc. slowing down and crashing your system. I highly recommend you look into ubuntu. It's the product of the free market and it blows the doors off Microsoft, reviews say it's even better then Windows 7!

Yeah there is a bit of a learning curve. But no more then going through all the hassle of trying to get your system back up after Microsh!t crashes. The largest software company in the world can't even get their flagship OS stable and relatively secure. I wonder what government subsidies (theft from taxpayers) they have taken besides!

ubuntu Linux free open source and works great!

Building

A editing rig.

I could spend 2300 on a mac pro or spend 1k and make a comparable if not superior rig on my own.

I'll give mac credit for taking a server motherboard and putting it into their herald. The 8-core behemoth. But I also like the fact that I can do what I want inside my computer without voiding a crappy warranty.

As far as Vista goes. It is troublesome in the security department. But I have no further complaints against it. I find that most Mac users are bashing vista because its the "cool" thing to do.

Mac user are a different breed. Microsoft ain't so bad.
Don't hate that which you do not understand.

I know what you’re talkin’ about!

Technicians ask little old me for advice, but here at home I can sometimes only throw up my hands. It’s the Mr. Bill empire… The more more junk they put out, the more we poor suckers will be apt to upgrade our hardware & software. We just keep playing their stupid little money game, don’t we?

is Bill Gate's personal problem.

well, libertarians should use open source

and any non-WIN OS in any case! :-)
Yes, ubuntu - from my country - is perhaps the best linus, though there as some very nice and aesthetic ones. I like the Linux KDE more than gnome, so you can try kubuntu instead of ubuntu.

Distrowatch dot com gives you a good overview of Linux releases (all/most free).

I am thinking about if for my next computer

because quite frankly I hate vista. Right now I am running xp and I find it at least tolerable (although I have a lot of trouble if I keep my computer running too long and it takes a few minutes after starting before I can do anything). Maybe I will go with vista if I get an alien ware computer (as far as I know they make the best computers) but that would be the only reason why I would run vista.

i heard most people hat vista

it uses too much ram. Best thing is to use xp with some modifications for vista or win 7. You can use/download win 7 themes even for your xp, then your xp looks and feels like win 7 already: -)

I have an alienware computer

And it's not worth the $$$.

Save you cash and build your own computer, it's really easy and cheap.

some great resources, check the forums

My current build:
AMD Phenom II 720 X3 [unlocked 4th core @ 3.2ghz]
GIGABYTE GA-MA790X-UD4P
4GB GSkill DDR2-1066
SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 4850
1TB WD Caviar Black HDD

costed less than $600 all from:

when I put it together [I'm using free Windows 7 RC now until March]

a whole lot cheaper than alienware

Thats where

I shop. Getting all my parts from them.

about Windows

I had to comment on this thread. As a person who is recognized in the Systems Management industry as an expert for the last 10 years, I am somewhat knowledgeable.

Ubuntu is not new news. It's also not the only Linux OS that will let you run it from the CD and try it out. Download Mandriva and get a similar experience.

Windows itself is very stable. When u install software that binds to the kernal, rundll32 etc and that software is poorly written or conflicts with others, that's when you have problems. Most PC problems that people have today are caused by accidentally installing spyware by using the system with a privileged account or poorly written drivers (especially scanner/printer drivers).

The fact is that close to 65% of the web-servers in the world run Windows Server 2003/2008. Both are incredibly robust operating systems that only need to be rebooted for patches installations (guess what, so does linux and Linux is patched just as frequently).

I don't like Microsoft corporation. I compete with them regularly and find their business practices questionable, but I don't make uninformed claims about their OS. It's actually pretty damn good.

Yeah right uninformed

Yeah right uninformed statements huh? Sigh! That must be why Microsoft knowledge base has thousands of entries of all their problems and half assed solutions.... Yeah windows is quite robust LOL! thanks for the laugh It's always the 3rd party software that the problem ... yeah and the stock market will recover soon... Sigh. Typical propaganda

Oh and nobody said it was new or that there weren't other versions of linux OS's geeze people reading comprehension...

lol its propaganda to say that Windows can work well?

Yeah windows works great in

Yeah windows works great in a vacuum where it doesn't ever have to interact with anything in the real world. You know all that evil 3rd party software that fixes all of windows holes....

stuff

windows is one giant vector to having your identity stolen, your passwords ransacked, and all your online accounts breeched.

i've worked on hundreds of compromised systems. it's too much work to teach people how to keep their XP/windows system secure.

"dual boot" or virtualization can mitigate that risk.

I setup a linux/windows dual boot configuration for those who need security and are a bit more advanced then a typical computer user.

they can power on their computer and select whether they want Windows XP to start, or if they want Ubuntu Linux to start.

they use Ubuntu Linux for day to day stuff, like web surfing, email, etc.

if they have need access to their quickbooks or something, they boot to XP for that specific session.

virtualization is even better. boot to ubuntu linux all the time, and just start an xp virtual machine within ubuntu.

you build the xp image and save a clean copy. if your xp virtual machine ever get's compromised by an attack, you delete it from within ubuntu, and start up a copy of your pristine xp virtual machine.

then you have access to your xp only software from within ubuntu.

gamers will dual boot, cause they need the native xp environment.

windows 7 and vista are OK. nothing really terribly different from XP other then they suck up some serious resources.

eventually though with computers moving to a 4 core cpu, 8 gig of ram (memory) and 1 terabyte of drive space as "standard", win7 and vista will run OK.

but people are the number one reason for viruses, doesn't matter how much software you run.

you can't escape a good zero day, if you stick your foot in the steel jaw.

but with windows, it's quite easy to do.

much more difficult to torpedo yourself with linux or mac.

Ubuntu?

Wonder what it means or is, in real life, if anything?

Would you please pass some more ubuntu. lol.

Ubuntu is an African term

Ubuntu is an African term for humanity, sharing and compassion. Its sorta like saying "for the people".

Vista does suck, and Macs may be cool...

But Linux and Macs don't have Visual Basic, the most powerful programming tool in the world, used by hundreds of thousands of programmers because of it's ease of use and amazing functionality.

VB allows non-programmer types like myself, a paleontologist, to write software that I've sold worldwide to other 'bug pikkers'. Two reasons for my name "BugMan".

'Cause there's a monster on the loose

ha...

"Visual Basic, the most powerful programming tool in the world"

That statement would only EVER be made by a non-programmer who thinks that they are...

I don't mean any disrespect, but that is like an accountant saying that the greatest race car in the world is a Ford because he can figure out how to drive it.

I am a developer, for over 20 years, and I can assure you, no real developer would be caught dead coding in VB. As far as .Net, mentioned in the reply, I won't even get into why .Net is quickly showing it's *ss. C# is a decent interpreted language, but the .Net technology has huge gaping flaws.

Wolfe, I'm sure you're the greatest,

but sometimes what makes thing powerful is not the difficulty to use them, but the simplicity to use them. "Power", in the context here, is that they built a Ford that everybody can drive, instead of a race car that only a professional can drive on a track. The power is in the practical utility to the most users. Sure, you can write a better program in whatever you use, but more specialty niche programs are written by more of us hacks that serve a great utility to lots of users.

Don't Forget .Net

and that's why Microsoft won't go away. Ballmer gets it. The world is powered by apps and apps are created by "developers" that need to be able to create them easily. .Net Framework 3.5 is ridiculously powerful and intuitive.

That easy?

I was unfortunate enough to have Vista loaded on my new Dell.

So it's free and easy? I may try that.

Guys just download a copy and burn it to CD or put on a USB stick and play around without changing your windows configuration in any way. That's What I have been doing since last night.

Best Linux distro for ubuntu I ever saw & it recognizes every little thing... Try using 'Beryl Project'! It's ridiculous!

Windows 7 RC is actually good compare to Vista

I'm running the free beta version until March, also dualbooting Ubuntu but I hardly use it since I'm a gamer.

I ran that beta for months n i finally rollled up my sleeves and got rid of the darn thing. It is horrible with a capital whore!! damn u microsoft.

Linux is good

But I prefer Windows. I've operated all my servers running on Windows for the past 8 years and they are still running smooth. The only time they went offline/crashed was when I set up a monitor in the firewall to watch for the nimba worm and I accidently hit allow and in a few short seconds, it brought the servers to their knees. After wiping the drives and restoring them, I never had a single problem since and that's the honest truth. It all boils down to what a person is stuffing their machines with that might cause stability issues.

I don’t mean to sound rude

I don’t mean to sound rude but how are you a PC tech and have all this trouble with Windows. I've run windows since 1994 and never had a problem. Vista as well as XP are amazing and reliable. I have owned 6 or 7 computers and I run two PC's at work. It's never caused me any issue ever. So far right now I have 3 Vista PC's and two XP and they all work flawlessly. I am really really hard on my computers too.

I have installed Ubuntu as well and I was impressed as far as a Linux implementation that is a bit more like Windows but it took forever to actually install. If you run it with what comes out of the box you could get by. Doesn’t mean you won’t have trouble though and if you do you will notice right away it’s far more difficult to diagnose those problems.

Honestly I don’t trust someone who says they are a PC tech yet always has trouble running windows.

What he said ^^ Also, if

What he said ^^

Also, if your a PC tech how is it your just now learning about Ubuntu? Don't you keep up to date with relevant trade news?
