BIG Opportunity for those who want a Small Government
Are We are Missing our Big Opportunity to FREE ourselves from Big State Government ?????
Right now, July 1, 2009, State governments are Stumbling Around for looking for ANSWERS. This is because they clearly have over spent, broke their budgets and now its CUT-BACK & DOWN SIZE TIME.
Question: Do you think the democrats or the Republicans are going to GIVE them the answers? Don't be silly. We libertarians MUST DO IT.
California State politicians are looking for answers, any answers. So is the State of Arizona, with its new Republican Woman in place as Governor, all she can think of is to raise State taxes another billion dollars.
States across the USA are now having to face the music, today. Not next week, but today. This means they suddenly want to be told what to do.
This is why I say that Libertarianism is missing the Big O of opportunity.
Now is the time to stop talking philosophy, free market, tax cuts....now is the time to LAY OUT THE PLAN as to what SPENDING CUTS must be made.
A STATE PLAN OF ACTION is needed that itemizes what functions and departments are essential, and which ones must go. Who has done the list? Answer: NO BODY. Not you, not me, not Lew Rockwell, Not Ron Paul, Not Peter Schiff, Not Tom Woods, Not him, her, or "Them". Certainly do not look to the Libertarian Party to provide your State Government with the answer. So it will be left to the republicans and democrats by default, who and what gets saved. Hence, nothing can be more STUPID than for libertarians not to Jump in at this point and write out the PLAN OF ACTION.
Take my own State of Arizona for example. Major budget crises is thought to be just 9 - 16 months behind California if "we do not do something". Republican Jan Brewer's answer is: Raise taxes a billion dollars.
Well OK, so no BOSS is going to descend from the Libertarian Mountains where the Founding Fathers of the Constitution lay and lay out the plan for us. We ... that is you and I, .... must get our plan of action out there.
Towards this end, here is my proposed Outline on the Direction we can take to cut State Government. [ Federal Government, you are next ]
Since many would agree that the 4 essential functions of Government are essential to peaceful living, lets not cut that now. { Sorry Anarcho- Capitalists }
Step 1) Save the City Police Departments
(protects persons & property)
Step 2) Save the City Fire Departments
(protects persons & property)
Step 3) Save the State Courts
(protects persons & property)
Step 4) Save the State Prisons
(protects persons & property)
Hence, if the State government function does not fundamentally protect persons and property, then it GOES TO THE CHOPPING BLOCK.
Yes, ALL the rest can go to the State Budget Cutting Chopping Block.
Three (3) techniques for government downsizing can be used.
A) Cut & end the program and/or service all together
B) Auction the program and/or service to the General Public
C) Lottery the Program and/or service to the General Public
First Up, State Parks. As with any State asset or function or service, we must look at the total assets involved, then its liabilities, then its services. By looking at all 3 components, assets, liabilities, and services, we can then balance out and make a determination which of the 3 budget cutting techniques above is best.
So, for example, State Parks.
In my state of Arizona, they have threatened to "close the Grand Canyon" -- I kid you not. Only Government can think itself so powerful as to close a gaping hole in the ground so that no one can see it. Now lets stop laughing and do the analysis.
Grand Canyon is a big "asset", raking in millions of dollars in tourist monies and visited by millions of tourist each year. Its a money maker for the State and it is a low liability asset. It provides a service, but its a service that can be privatized. So option A) Cut and end the program is not going to happen since people will always go to gaze at the big hole. So Options B) and C) come into play. To place the asset, the Park up for bid means it must be packaged correctly, into a definable property with limited usage rules in place. Once it is packaged and defined, then placing it up for bid is a good way to go. But so too is putting this defined property into a lottery. The lottery winner of the Grand Canyon will no doubt not know how to maximize the profit from the Grand Canyon and will no doubt sell it to the highest bidder who does. Thus someone gets lucky, and the State budget gets nothing. So option B), auctioning off the Grand Canyon is the way to proceed, the winner can pay the state and the State can get out of the business of letting tourists see a hole in the ground. That is just one park. There are plenty to auction.
Next up are State Roads. Road companies and communication companies could be encouraged to team up and bid on this one in an auction. Monies can go to the State's empty purse. Road Companies and Communication companies can then find the real market drive time value and charge for its use like phone companies charge for use time today. This has the added benefit of putting real market principles to work in the area of roads...making them safer, smarter, faster, networked, and extremely cheap to build. A real libertarian vision in the making...
Next up are all sorts of services such as the dog pound, trash business, etc. Again we look at the assets, the liabilities, the services provided and decide which of the 3 methods above work best: A simple lottery may be best and fast...then those who really want it can buy it or start their own service. Or it might be that an Auction is best, or just cutting and ending the function all together.
Next Up, State Schools. All public schools can be autioned. Property taxes for schools could be turned into vouchers to be used at any school of choice. There are many ideas, but Publicly funded schools must go. There is no reason that education has to be a public product. The marketplace can provide education. Arizona has proved that with its charter schools. Its just a step away from being fully privatized.
State hospitals..... again, assets, liabilities, and services. Letting someone "win" a hospital may or may not be a good idea, especially since they are upside down and loosing money. Big name charitiies may step up to buy a few, such as the United Way and the Red Cross. Whole new charities may be born to buy and run hospitals. Indeed, some business savvy may find a much better way to run them cheaper. But we all know that 1st party pricing, not 3rd party pricing, is the wave of the future. Need a triple bye pass? Get 50 surgeons to bid it out as to when and where. Sounds crazy? But this is what is happening now. Those who shop for their heart operation are comparing Costa Rica's prices to those found in Hong Kong and Thailand and LA.... LA is loosing business. In your own local city or town, medical competition is unheard of, and this is the problem. But it is getting better. I recall in the early 1970's you would go see a doctor, wait hours in the waiting room, and if it was not a Wednesday when he plays golf, you may get in to see him. Med schools kept a tight leash on the number of doctors then and the Med association did a good job of keeping the business price protected. Those days are over. Soon will be over is the 3rd party pays employer deduction/benefit problem which is making souring costs.
Well that is enough for today... .so get out there, WRITE THE PLAN of what SHOULD BE CUT, SOLD, AUCTIONED, and sent to the Lottery...
That is how we will get "Small Government", by providing specific answers in this time of budget collapse....and "IOU's".
Imagination is what is needed... and we libertarians have plenty of that. But let us not forget to Name Names, call out government functions as NOT NEEDED at this TIME. Keep these government functions of Police, and Courts because they are key to private property system.
In peace & liberty,
Treg
PS.... if you like this idea, please copy n paste it around to your friend. Like just some of it, well add to it and make it your own. Spread the word, CUT GOVT ....by telling GOVT where to cut.

Question: Are you suggesting we come up with plans
for Big Gov't to implement or for We the People to implement?
Even if we could form a big enough union, to push our ideas through we'd still be "betting" on Big Gov't to fulfill them without hijacking the movement.
I do not think there is one solution that begins with the abdication of self-rule (given over to a group or individual) with the "promised" goal of returning it to you at the end of the day; or resulting in "less gov't." That is the definition of insanity, when we start to believe in that delusion.
I think our focus should be education and innovation -- being these are two of the most important philosophies in a "truly" free-market.
First DPers need to get our collective head around the deeper notion of liberty and counter-economics.
Second DPers need to "organize" around actions we can begin/make without any gov't invovled.
Third DPers need to be "less" politically concerned. In a free-market innovation and entrepreneurialism is the core -AND- not voting or politiking; the latter is where our focus is. If you believe in the law of affirmations then that latter focus will only bring more gov't.
Ron Paul says if you want more of something legislate against it.
Are we not (as DPers) lobbying for bigger gov't -- We are 90% focused on getting so-and-so elected or re-elected -- can someone rule in your stead or is it self-rule for you?
Just some thoughts (don't get in a twist) -- Thinking is good ;-)

*&^ Constitution --- Constitutional Rationality
I am saying Pick 3 or 4 or 5 government functions and say...
Abolish or sell off that function, Save Money, Shrink the Government.
You don't need to get philosophical, just rank government functions and say, "This we can do without".
Send your list to your friends, to the City Paper, to the TV News, get the word out.
Write a clever catchy essay "TEN GOVERNMENT FUNCTIONS WE CAN LIVE WITHOUT".
1)
2)
3)
"THE AX LIST: Ten Government Programs Not Needed"
1)
2)
3)
"20 Ways to Shrink Our State Government"
1)
2)
3)
"10 Things Obama Can do to Save America"
1)
2)
3)
If you are not sure, lets cooperatively make these lists here at the DP.
The point is to be practical, specific, and NOT philosophical or partisan.
Hence, do NOT write:
1) Legalize Freedom -- Where is the What & How?
2) End the Income Tax -- How will that work?
3) End the Fed -- How will that work?
instead write as specifically as we can...
1) Auction off all the National Parks to the highest bidder -- (with use restrictions in place)
2) Close 498 Military Bases outside the USA
3) Authorize Bill #123 that lets citizens trade in gold & silver
4) Sunset Provision these following Laws; Patriot Act, Military Commissions Act,
5) Abolish the Nuclear Insurance Act (public pays insurance industry premium over certain amount),
This way, it will be considered as a COST reducing Measure, and not a Partisan thing. The GENERAL PUBLIC is wanting to see such a list and they will AGREE that these things are not needed, especially when we are in a depression and going broke.

I wish everyone was rational too
Here's what going to happen when you start asking to "chop" services
-everyone on welfare (corporate, poor, politicians) will come out of the woodwork against you
-they'll look to our Federal government for more money, cause all the Fed does is print money anyway.
Not too many people are rational and not too many people on welfare are fond of losing their "job". Selling US land assets sure can be done, but who's going to do it? The irrational government that wouldn't listen to this plan.
What we really need are rational people to run for office who can do the things you're talking about. As long as we have a majority fascist idiot representatives change isn't going to happen.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
Start getting freedom today by dumping Federal Reserve Notes, Stocks, Banks and anything made outside the USA. Buy precious metals, real estate, businesses, food and guns and get your business community to use local or sound currenc
Throwing in some ideas to add to the discussion:
Quite a few years back we helped start a private ambulance business in a county, and we had to fight a Tri-County publicly financed organization. (they wanted to supply the service) A government agency is not allowed to compete with private enterprise, so we got it done.
So why not have private industry supply firefighting services? In California during the past fires, some people were complaining that the rich people could afford to hire private companies to protect their property while the poor folk's homes were lost.
Would it cost any more if all firefighting was done by private enterprise? Would it be as efficient?
I'm glad we are thinking along the same lines Treg.
"Now is the time to stop talking philosophy, free market, tax cuts....now is the time to LAY OUT THE PLAN as to what SPENDING CUTS must be made."
You're absolutely right. If we say "tax cuts", that counts as a "promise" just as much as the big spending government programs that statists want.
If we say "let's save money here", we are doing something radically different. We are acknowledging the common-sense truth that there is "no such thing as a free lunch".
"Keep these government functions of Police, and Courts because they are key to private property system."
As a Minarchist, I agree. But even in the realm of crime and punishment, the allocation of resources needs to be very different.
I believe that we should apply the slogan of "no victim - no crime".
Following the Portuguese example of ending the "War on Drugs" would be a good start. In fact, that deserves a thread of its own!
The police in Britain are so useless right now because they have this weird aversion to dealing with real crime (especially violent crime) and real victims.
They would much rather intimidate old ladies for not wearing a seatbelt and crap like that!
Its all a question of priorities.
"I believe the true significance of the Gold Commission is that the politicians and central bankers were so alarmed at such a thing that they made sure it was packed by an array of Keynesians and monetarists." (Ron Paul 1985)
The PLAN to SAVE the NATION.... would be a best seller
And the BOOK should strike a tone that is independent, neither left nor right, but PRACTICAL.....and of course its practical SOLUTIONS in the PLAN all lead to MORE FREEDOM !!!
In Peace & Liberty,
Treg
PS... Who is going to write that book and make a million? Come on people step up!
Sorry Treg, Being a
Sorry Treg,
Being a lifelong libertarian, it's hard for me to swallow that government is the best to supply us with police, fire, courts and prisions. If we cut all the rest these will only grow. The police only do whatever they want to. The courts are a tool for the globalists. They keep us enslaved. And don't even get me started about the booming prision system. You drink one beer in an hour and you could be going to jail and your life ruined. I'm starting to believe that anarcho-capitalism is the only way out of this. Trying to beat the devils at their own game is just going to frustrate you.
You Judge A Tree By It's Fruit, NOT its Flower
Ira, I want you to read a book for me and lets talk about it...
The book was written by one of my favorite writers, Dr. Steven Pinker from MIT. Being the brain guy, he has written lots of wonderful books on the human mind...one boldly called, "How the Mind Works" and another, "The Language Instinct". But in the book BLANK SLATE, he ventures off into our Libertarian territory, by accident, again in the book BLANK SLATE. As in there is no mental Blank Slate when we babies are born, not tabla rasa Rand would say. Please read Pinker's Blank Slate and his analysis ( I wish I could find the page numbers ) which directly addresses what you wrote above...find the book here: http://www.amazon.com/Blank-Slate-Modern-Denial-Nature/dp/01...
Pinker also cites the books "Moral Minds: How Nature Designed Our Universal Sense of Right and Wrong" and the book, "Darwinian Politics; The Evolutionary Origin of Freedom", written by a libertarian economist Paul Rubin whose work points out the limitations and ramifications of libertarian theory based upon the growing understanding of Human Nature via the evolutionary sciences of sociobiology, evolutionary psychology, etc. Rubin's book points out the need for a new Libertarianism, an advanced model that takes in all the evolutionary sciences and what they have to say about Human Nature. The book, "The Moral Animal" is another good one to introduce you to the science of evolutionary psychology which has all sorts of implications for libertarianism 2.0 as I like to call it. I just finished reading "The Lucifer Principle; A Scientific Expedition into the Forces of History" a second time, and it along with all the books above, I believe, mean that if Libertarianism 2.0 is to advance and grow, it must swallow up most of these ideas on Human Nature and Human Society.
Libertarianism 1.0 is John Locke, Thomas Jefferson, Adam Smith, Herbert Spencer (who had the right direction) and Libertarianism 2.0 is Ayn Rand, Von Mises, Friedman and Hayek (who had the right direction) all do not get us there, that is a complete understanding of ourselves as human beings and where we need to go to be Free and live in relative Liberty.
Today, 2009, we are still stuck with Libertarianism 2.0. What needs to be understood and written is "Libertarianism 3.0 the Science of Human Freedom". After you read Blank Slate, you and I as life long libertarians should talk.... really talk. I really would like to take on the job of writing "Libertarianism 3.0: The Science of Keeping Human's Free" and someone like you, a life long 2.0 libertarian is just the sort of person with 2.0 concerns and language that I need to address in the book.
In peace & liberty,
Treg
I'm going to
put this on my "to do" list tomorrow morning.
What State do you live in?
What are the top 10 things to cut there?
Tell us...
I just thought your title was funny
but if you want to get serious:
I'll have to work on the list, but let's start with:
Rick Perry
Kay Bailey Hutchison
John Cornyn
John Culberson
Black boxes for voting
Trilateral Corridor
Immigration (although some of this will be voluntary for Obama)
School districts
Chemtrail spraying
Toll road booths
Cameras all over our roads
Oops, I'm going over now. Don't want to get too ambitious, like Obama, in the first 100 days. Oh, I'm in Texas. The list looks like I am still jokin' around, but I'm not.
your post is full of boloney!
...long, drawn out BS!
answer:
repeal the war on drugs to reduce the police force, reduce the ineffectiveness of the ENTIRE court system and reduce the need for the prison system you said we need to save...
bring the troops home!
between the trillion in the drug "war" and the trillion in the foreign policy "wars" that we would save EVERY YEAR, i'd say that would be a darn good start to repairing our economy!
now, isn't that a lot simpler than the hogwash you listed?
O Captain, My Captain, rise up and hear the bells!
its 'cos I owe ya, my young friend...
Rockin' the FREE world in Tennessee since 1957!
Can I have Cheese with that Baloney?
I agree with you 100%, that is what must be done on the Federal level.
But what are the programs and functions that you want stopped at the STATE level?
Be very Specific, list departments and tell them how it can be done. How to get from here to there.
You will find that most people do not want to hear libertarian theory or sweeping generalizations such as "Just end State Income Tax" as one person commented.
They want a LIST. A list of what to cut, how to cut it, sell it, auction it, lottery it out...
And they want a LIST of what to keep.
WHat State do you live in?
in peace & liberty,
Treg
Here they are closing parks...

I have an idea
First of all I would be willing to bet that your state has an income tax correct.Income tax is the worst and most ineffeciant way of collecting tax .One thing about Texas is we have a sales tax and we are billions in the black. So here is my siggestion for Arizona have your state declare bankruptcy.and work out details for only a paying the most essential and basic elements of the goverment like policeman ,fireman ,Hostital etc..then give IOU s to all the worthless beuracrats includeing the governor and state senate and all other worhtless leechs who got you in this mess in the first place .Then start all over with a state sales tax and declare a chpt7 for previous debts the state owes. What banksters dont realize is two can play this game just because we owe them doesnt mean we have to pay them back.he he !
Thanks for the idea... Chapter 7 for a State Government?
Has it been done?
What about the idea that the essential functions are:
Police,
Courts,
Prisons,
Fire
Perhaps Fire departments can be privatized too...? Should not all building insurance companies PAY competing fire companies to service an area?
Treg
Have a state auction
sell of the state capirtol and governors mansion and replace them with trailor homes.
Heck
let them govern from their own homes. Who said we have to provide anything for them.
Sure
every element or entity should be able to declare bankrupcy if they cant they should am I right about Arozona being an income tax state?
Yes, Arizona citizens file Income Tax -- 7% I think
Not fun...
BINGO!
Theres your problem and this is what is wrong your state and the US wihich will soon go the way of cali and az.
BINGO to SPENDING... that is what did us in.
That is what did California in.....and that is what is doing in the Federal Govt
yes
that too.
