Any DPers Have Luck With Natural Anti-Depressants? Any suggestions?
I'm looking to find a natural anti-depressant and have been doing some research lately on it. Obviously, eating healthy is important and have found several sights that recommend a few different vitamins, foods, natural remedies, etc. I'm asking Daily Paulers if they or friends have had any luck with anything in particular? Here is a few paragraphs from a site I found useful:
Omega-3 fatty acids
Omega-3 fatty acids are a type of good fat needed for normal brain function. Our bodies can't make omega-3s on their own, so we must obtain them through our diet.
Studies have linked depression with low dietary intake of omega-3 fatty acids. In countries with higher fish consumption, such as Japan and Taiwan, the depression rate is 10 times lower than in North American. Postpartum depression is also less common.
Studies suggest that omega-3's together with antidepressants may be more effective than antidepressants alone.
Cold water fish such as salmon, sardines, and anchovies are the richest food source of omega-3 fatty acids. But instead of eating more fish which contain mercury, PCBs, and other chemicals, fish oil capsules are considered a cleaner source of omega-3 fatty acids. Many companies filter their fish oil so that these chemicals are removed.
Fish oil capsules are sold in health food stores, drug stores, and online. Most brands should be stored in the fridge to prevent the oil from going rancid. When comparing brands, the key active components for depression are EPA and DHA.
Fish oil capsules may interact with blood-thinning drugs such as warfarin and aspirin. Side effects may include indigestion and bleeding. Fish oil should not be taken 2 weeks before or after surgery. Fish oil can also cause a fishy aftertaste. To prevent this, try taking the fish oil just before meals.
3) SAM-e
SAM-e, pronounced "sammy", is short for S-adenosyl-L-methionine. It's a chemical that's found naturally in the human body and is believed to increase levels of neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine.
Several studies have found SAM-e is more effective than placebo.
In North America, SAM-e is available as an over-the-counter supplement in health food stores, drug stores, and online. It should be enteric-coated for maximum absorption. Although it's one of the more expensive supplements, it remains popular as a remedy for depression and osteoarthritis.
Side effects can include nausea and constipation. For more information, read the SAM-e and Depression.
4) Folic Acid
Folic acid, also called folate, is a B vitamin that is often deficient in people who are depressed.
Folate is found in green leafy vegetables, other vegetables, fruit, beans, and fortified grains. It's one of the most common vitamin deficiencies because of poor diet but also because chronic conditions and various medications such as aspirin and birth control pills can also lead to deficiency.
Besides food, folic acid is also available as a supplement or as part of a B-complex vitamin.
Researchers at Harvard University have found that depressed people with low folate levels don't respond as well to antidepressents, and taking folic acid in supplement form can improve the effectiveness of antidepressants. For more information, read Low Folate and Vitamin B12 Linked to Depression.
5) 5-HTP
5-HTP is short for 5-hydroxytryptophan. It's produced naturally in the body and is used to make the neurotransmitter serotonin. Although taking 5-HTP in supplement form may theoretically boost the body's serotonin levels, many experts feel there is not enough evidence to determine the safety of 5-HTP. It should not be combined with antidepressants.
5-HTP Fact Sheet

6) Diet
Reduce your intake of sweets
Sweets temporarily make you feel good as blood sugar levels soar, but may worsen mood later on when they plummet.
Avoid caffeine and alcohol
Caffeine and alcohol both dampen mood. Alcohol temporarily relaxes us and caffeine boosts energy, but the effects of both are short-lived. Both can worsen mood swings, anxiety, depression, and insomnia.
Vitamin B6
Vitamin B6 is needed to produce the mood-enhancing neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine. Although deficiency of vitamin B6 is rare, a borderline deficiency may occur in people taking oral contraceptives, hormone replacement therapy, and drugs for tuberculosis.
Magnesium
Most people do not get enough magnesium in their diets. Good sources of magnesium are legumes, nuts, whole grains and green vegetables. Like vitamin B6, magnesium is needed for serotonin production. Stress depletes magnesium.

RP probably wouldn't be
RP probably wouldn't be opposed to medicinal marijuana
I don't think RP is for medical marijuana
But he is against the war on drugs, the government telling anyone whether they can use medical marijuana or not.
I saw allot fo medical marijuana advocates in SF at lunch with RP, and that was the end of medical marijuana during the campaign, really.
I know there's allot of money for the right medical marijuana/cannabis activists... I know farmers and dispensariers, people were willing to take RP to the inside, to promote medical marijuana... he didn't come back... the Republicans for Ron Paul were not even asked to try to be delegates. This area is AKA the "lost coast", and RP steared clear of this area, despite all the invitations..
Matter of fact, we had an innative, Cannabis Health and Hemp Innative 08, which wound up with Kucinich, and then it died, because allot of folks, the ones with the money, wanted RP, not Kucinich.
WE ARE GOING TO WIN!

Start with the basics
Good nutrition, adequate sleep, exercise. So many folks reject the "pill for everything" from a doctor, then go looking for an herb for everything... Optimize your health FIRST.
Truth exists, and it deserves to be cherished.
I think it is good advice to
I think it is good advice to first have test done to see if you have some kind of chemical imbalance before experimenting with any natural medicine or any drug for that matter. If there is nothing wrong, and your body is capable of producing the right chemicals than all you may need is exercise and meditation to liberate or stimulate the release of anti-depressants that your body is capable of producing. If you have tests done and discover that you lack the ability to produce something, then of course you look for a natural substitute. But don't just go off pumping something into your system that you have no idea if you need or not.
You don't need drugs to be happy.
You don't need alcohol to be wild.
And you don't need government to live a free life.

Blue Light therapy
For SAD, Seasonal Affective Disorder, a lack of sunshine in northern climates has been linked to lower seratonin levels. In the past, large lamps blasted white light from a few inches away from your face to help correct this. Studies have shown that it is only the blue light spectrum that affects seratonin levels.
LED technology has lowered the cost of these units, and a 12X12 panel can be bought for under $70, and are quit effective. Most people notice an added benefit of weight loss when undergoing blue light therapy during the winter months.
Saint John's Wart
Take it every day. I have no thyroid, so my DO recommended it to help with the endocrine system imbalance. I get angry a lot, but I'm sure not depressed, as I was before.
Exercise and meditation.
Mind over matter.

No no no
THere is no evidence of liver damage from SJW. It is totally safe and has been used for 1000s of years. I myself have used it for years.
Positive effects I have personally noticed:
- uplifts mood
- boosts energy
- helps me bounce out of bed more easily in the morning
- raises threshold for stress (stress, idiots, etc. don't bother me as much)
- turns me from introvert into more social person (I always take some before a party or date)
- makes me feel more confident, less dependent on others' approval
- makes me feel more compelled to tidy up (good for housework)
- AND ... improves my motor coordination. Such as when dancing.
Good stuff.
by the way,
Exercise usually gets me very similar results. Like walking a few miles, or better yet, biking 4 or 5 miles.
SAM-e is like SJW concentrate -- and is much more expensive. For me, SJW worked just as well.
Excersize is said to be as effective as meds
with fewer contraindications.

took me several years to realize that there was a difference.
google it for more details.
SAM-e is by far the best natural supplement available for.....
mood enhancement. I've used it. It works as advertised. MY wife currently uses it and loves it.
yeah? Apparently its good for liver health
and joints. Its kind of pricey - like $50.00 for 30 ct 400mg- Did they seem to start showing their effects ( for depression) soon? One week? 3 months? Im curious about this one.
You should notice a marked difference within a .......
week or so.
thank you Sable : )
I shall proceed : )
Sure...
...I study holistic medicine:
- Sensoril (Ashgawanda Extract)
- Phosphatidylserine (I personally recommend EndoAmp Max from Primordial Performance)
See how those guys work out for ya! They primarily keep your cortisol levels down.
Your headline looked easy enough lol
but it looks like you know more about the subject than I do. I was going to recommend a reasonable Pinot Noir and some cosplay after the kids are in bed.

... and you'll be surprised at what Cannabis/Marijuana can do. It's natural and it's not possible to overdose because it isn't toxic enough. can't say that about most legal substances. ingest or vaporize... or smoke

Help Others
find someone in need .... whatever it is - great or small ....
takes our mind off ourselves ....
if you believe in God ... sing praises to him and give thanks in all things...
pray .....
drink lots of water and exercize .....good sleep - breathe
raw fruits and vegatables and vitamins and natural suplements ....
Few things...
I highly recommend:
- Sensoril (Ashgawanda Extract)
- Phosphatidylserine (abbreviated PS - best product is EndoAmp Max by Primordial Performance)
Regarding the PS, I remember a post on Primordial's forums from a guy that's had ADHD his entire life, has taken drugs and what-not to control it, and said after just one month on EndoAmp Max, his ADHD is all but gone. Anti-depressants are the most overprescribed med, and work for approximately 5 to 10% of cases. Even then, natural alternatives are always better as they help bring your body to where it ought to be rather than using a med to substitute something that is lacking.
I also highly recommend joining this forum:
http://www.ImmortalHair.org
It's a natural site for hair loss, however, the forum itself is aimed towards and any all facets of health. The administrator, Brian (forum moniker "CausticSymmetry") worked for Dr. Whitaker's and a few other well-known alternative medicine clinics in California for 9 years, and has a degree in Medicine. Incredibly intelligent guy with a lot of experience under his belt that can answer anything from cancer cures to how to prevent HIV from turning into AIDS! My one-stop shop for any nutritional advice.
Interesting advice here..
devon mentioned laughter.
I completely agree. It's an important ingredient in a healthy life.

We're just trying to keep you off SSRIs b/c of the PhIC, which
For some reason, we're expected to know every law that exists in America & in our state so we don't break it. We're supposed to know this when we're 18. There's no litmus test for them, as in the 10 commandments or rhyme or reason. C.U.R.E.
is separate from the PrIC Prison Industrial Complex & MIC Medical Industrial Complex. A psychiatrist keeps you going into his office b/c his goal is to make you think & keep you thinking you're sick, cause if you weren't, you wouldn't go. A psychotropic drug will contains a list of side-effects which is really unintended effects, not meaning that the drug will not produce them, but that you don't want the drug to produce them but it will. Millions as you've heard are made form psychotropic drugs each year & if you look in the DSM, the manual, the bible for the psychiatric community, you know what a crock mental illness really is, nicotine withdrawal is included in there. If you look at their diagnoses, you wouldn't know 1 was a disorder unless it was labeled that way b/c many of them seem like perfectly normal behavior. My favorite 1s are personality disorder, behavioral disorder, what the hell does that mean? Depressive disorder isn't 1 b/c we naturally get depressed from the crap that happens around us, its perfectly normal, not a disorder. It's our body working normally. Don't ever take psychotropic drugs, yes there are stories of them helping people but they also become physically addictive. Try getting off of them & it affects your whole body, not just for a week or a month but for years. You have to work very hard mentally to overcome depression which isn't a bad thing & you're forever free for doing it. Imagine not having to go to your dr. every 3 months for a med evaluation,. or going to the drug store, or telling your employer what drugs you're taking & having to answer 20 ?s b/c of it. FREEDOM. & think of the lifetime savings of not doing these things. Please don't think these psychotropic drugs can't have long-term negative effects on you b/c they can. I suggest very very strong doses of B, its water soluble.
Mental/ psychiatric "hospitals" are just holding tanks for people, if that, they don't help them recover. If it healed you to have a cup of coffee in the middle of the night, forget it, you won't get it there, they know what's best for you, not you, you can have medication forced upon you by court order, if a hot bath or fresh air gazing up at starry skies works best for you, forget it, lights out at 11 pm & thats it. Psychiatry is about & operates on what acceptable behavior according to a psychiatrist is. If you go to a psychiatrist looking for something wrong w/ you, you'll probably find it & tell me, HOW ARE YOU GOING TO PROVE YOU DON'T HAVE MENTAL ILLNESS?? At most, its a difference of opinion b/t you & the md.
I encourage you to find a natural high, rather than 1 w/ drugs. Go to the DSM, take a typical disorder & as you're reading the characteristics, cover up the word disorder & see what you're left w/. Is there anything wrong w/ the way that person acts, or do they just say it is? The DSM is written by psychiatrists, published by the American Psychiatric Assn.! Talk about conflicts of interest! Gosh, see what happens when you ask somethin' around here?

What has helped for me is this
Own your depression. What I mean is-there is something bringing you dowm, go ahead and feel it. The problems come when you try to avoid the inevitable. Ride it out. Then releif will come after you allow yourself to feel..
The answer is within yourself. Not a drug. I've been there.
