I Just Have to Get This Off My Chest
I have been looking for a job for the last six months. I haven't been in front of an interviewer since December of 2008. In lieu not finding any admin jobs, I decided to see what was going on in healthcare. I thought I might retrain into something else, parlaying my adimin skills into medical admin or something.
I recently contacted some local community colleges about their phlebotomy programs. I was told by both that preference is given to non-English speakers as far as slots in the program go. Here is a quote from one of the advisors:
"This program is funded by a grant from the Department of Labor. We are mandated by the conditions of the grant to provide developmental students with supplementary academic assistance and to give preference to these students who may be native speakers of another language or at a pre-English 101 academic level. Places in the program are also available to other students after that."
I am about ready to just blow a f**king gasket...Technically, I am not even eligible for any retraining privileges because my profession, admin assistant is considered " in demand" in my state. I learned my profession was in demand from the state's website which has not been updated since September of 2008, the same month that the economy started blowing up.
Never mind that recruiters are receiving hundreds of resumes for every admin job posting. In spite of that, I am looking for ways to retrain/retool myself anyway. GM is getting piles of money to do this very thing right now...
If the state learned that I was trying to get training while I was receiving unemployment payments, I would lose the benefit and they would demand that I pay back what I have received. I have just about had it. I figured I could at least air my compaint here. I don't know where else to go with this...Thank you to those of you who have listened and taken this in.
Love,
Elizabeth

Can you teach?
Charter school (where I live anyway) are in more demand as people are getting their kids out of main stream schools. If you have a college degree..you can teach.

For starters
stop taking government handouts.
2-get off your butt and quit waiting for the 'perfect job' or for 'assistance. If you have to wait tables or flip burgers, go do it.
I have no sympathy for people who take welfare and then cry about government. No one forced you to ask for and accept a handout from the government teat.
I REALLY have no sympathy for people who go without work for 6 months because they can't find 'exactly' what they are looking for. There is work out there. Be willing to get dirty if necessary, sell off what you don't need, and downsize - even move to another state to find a lower cost of living if that's what it takes.
Take some flippin' RESPONSIBILITY for yourself for a change. Obviously you will not find a cushy 'whatever it was you were doing' job any time soon in your area.
And by the way - exactly how hard have you been 'looking' if you haven't done a single interview in 6 months? Quit kidding yourself.
The faster you end that little delusion the better. Anyone REALLY wanting a job in this country can get one. It may not allow you to splurge on Starbucks everyday or maintain your previous lifestyle, but there ARE jobs out there. Not doing a single interview tells me either you are going about it ALL wrong, or you really aren't trying very hard.
Become a Licensed Vocational Nurse.
You can support yourself, while you get an RN or train for something else. If you are a nurse, you can find a job anywhere in the world, even during a depression. RN's do admin. work and start out with great pay and benefits. An LVN in Texas takes about 1 year.
Use that anger to get yourself a job
Kick butt, take names later.
Looking sux.,,,but
Don't give up, we are all rooting for you!

whats to get off your chest?
when you fill english-only speaking slots first its called racism. when you fill non-english speaking slots first its called 'equal opportunity'. Now im no Aristotle, but that sounds perfectly logical to me...

Read the Little House on the Prairie
series in the spare time you have. Quite the eye-opener and very inspirational. Banks, people and jobs were rotten back then, too.
Elizabeth let me understand
You say you want to parlay your admin. skills into medical admin. but you want to take a phiebotomy course. This course is for learning how to draw blood..Perhaps for your administrative skils maybe your better off taking a medical billing course.Either way its still very unfair.Someone on here was asking why do people want tighter border control. Welll that person probalbly never lost a job or a class spot to a "non english-speaking "illegal imagrant.

Obummer said he would favor I Immigrants before Americans. I have listened in dis-belief hearing this statement many times thinking it was part of divide and conqueror. Everyone in DC should be tried for Treason, damn Criminals. I just lost my job 2 1/2 weeks ago myself. At least it happened during summer so I can enjoy it for a couple of more weeks. before I know it, snow flakes will be flying, we will be on a bank holiday, and Marshall Law will have been declared!

I am afraid it will only get worse when Sotomayor

gets in. These democrats are gonna do a great job of keeping the minority vote. It seems now, white and english speaking people will now be the minority. I am not prejudice or anything, I just think they know for the most part, the lower class will vote by what they see on T.V.. I guess most classes vote by what they see on T.V. in all actuality. I just hope the minorities will realize that the battle we are fighting transcends all races and religions, and has become us versus them. I wish you the best, I think we all are experiencing problems from this economic downturn. There goal will be immunity for the illegals, and we will all be fighting to work for $3.00 an hour soon enough.

The R3volution requires action, not observation!!!!
Wow, that is a sobering thought...You could be right.
When I was a child we used to say the Pledge of Allegiance everyday in school. It was a like a sacred moment every time we did it. In those days, when I was young it didn't seem like there were divisive political parties--we were all just Americans. It was American to work hard, pay your taxes, help at the PTA meetings. The flag and our citizenship were treated as sacred things. Granted, I was a child and naive about so many things but, being American, was never taken for granted then, by anyone. I have never questioned who or what I was in terms of my nationality and what that meant--the privileges and great responsibilities it entailed. Now I feel like I have been transported to another country. I just don't recognize this place anymore..

Be persistent
Unless I misunderstood you, you can get into the program but you're not priority. Find out when the program starts, get on a waiting list and annoy the hell out of them. Just because they want people who speak another language doesn't mean they will fill the available seats with those people. And they need motivated individuals.
Ironically as a nurse, is drives me crazy when I have to communicate with an employee in another language because their english is not that good or I have family members that demand or say "I want a spanish speaking...." to take care of their mother.. Before you know it every culture will demand that the staff speaks their language whether it's Korean, French creole, Spanish, Swahili, German,.......Hopefully if you are persistent enough they will appreciate your commitment and you will be enrolled. I wish you the best. (What about certified nursing assistant, or a med-tech) or Licensed Practical Nurse(usually a 1 year program if you already have pre-requisites). Good luck! I feel your frustration.

Yes, dom7p, I agree with you-
I could just bug the hell out of them, get on the waiting list, etc. I have considered the LPN or medical assistant route. Yes, I would have prerequisites but, that is not a huge hurtle. Interesting to hear that you are running into language issues. Thank you for your comments and input. Great stuff. :)

Language issues and CULTURAL ISSUES
For Example I'm a nurse Supervisor (R.N)- I have a white nurse complaining about a Haitian c.n.a not doing what she asked her to do, the c.n.a will not look at her when she is talking to her and the c.n.a doesn't always give a response when asked a question or told to do something. The Haitian C.N.A says the nurse keeps following her about doing her job and talks to her like she is a child. The c.n.a started crying when I told her that she needs to look at the nurse when she is being spoken to otherwise the nurse will feel she is being ignored. In their culture, eye contact is a sign of disrespect quite the opposite for us. When we say something needs to be done especially "now", they believe they have more time. In their culture to walk away and do as they are told is appropriate where as here, we want you to acknowledge some type of understanding. The c.n.a was shocked when I told her that her gestures or actions are considered rude in America and I told her she needs to learn what is appropriate here. Her response, "really". Not to mention I've been accused of being racist (I am African American/Black whatever) by other people of color from a different culture when I'm simply doing my job. I guess I should be taking sides based on color or culture. The assumptions are unbelievable.

Thank you Granger and Dream...
You know, I am not racist and I don't hate people from other countries, but, jeez, for those of us who have contributed to this country for so many years ( I am almost 47), it this what we are left with? This just feels surreal to me. I have a Bachelor's Degree also. Weirdly, in this situation with the phlebotomy program, I am over educated. I need to be less literate...crazy, crazy stuff.

Saying, "it's crazy" is being too kind
Like me, the government doesn't want to hire you because the cut off age for a prison cook in CA is 37. Discrimination? YOU bet. You are the babiest of the boomers, and we boomers are getting screwed by the "greatest generation" .... ever see the Ron Howard movie, "Cocoon?" Did you see how "The Greatest Generation" had no problem communicating with their grandchildren, but the boomer (mother) no husband, life is messed up, can't relate to folks or children?
That movie clued me in to how we boomers are being played. Did you need Al Gore to tell you from his SUV that YOU, who have been recycling, reusing, for decades now, that YOU are THE PROBLEM? On one hand, I can't believe this BS they are selling us. Another thing I noticed is that our "old" music is being played all the time... the other day I felt like I was a teenage again when I heard a radio being played, and I mentioned it... man, this music... the guy tells me, "Yeah you know you're old when your music is the music they play all the time". No wonder I don't listen to the radio.
How about writting letters seeking employment by the politicians in your county/city? If your degree is in science, seek creative jobs. If your degree is in arts, seek accounting jobs and ask for allot of money... blab on and on about Mises and the Fed and I bet you can get a good job with benefits and be richly rewarded for learning how to not do the job on the job.

About 15 years ago, my daughter attended ITT Tech School,
She borrowed the money and paid her own way and then paid the money back. At the same time there were some Mexican girls who had a free ride at the school somehow.
So this has been going on for quite some time. Yes, it P.O.'s me, too!
My hat is off to you Elizabeth
I found the same situation about a decade ago when I was looking for chef work.. it didn't matter I had a degree and certificates and licenses... they wanted, demanded I speak Spanish.
That convinced me to go out on my own and now I work for caterers.. I'm more artistic because an artist is never poor.
Whoever hires you is one LUCKY employer. I wish you all the best and encourage you to keep on keepin' on! You GO grrrrrrrrl!!
