The Chinese are not stupid. They know they hold a lot of U.S. debt, and if the dollar tanks, they'll be getting repaid with lots of worthless paper. They're understandably cautious.
Here you've got a great big country with lots of debt, lots of guns and lots of hubris, for a country that doesn't have much to be proud of anymore... except it's history of personal liberty, which is long gone. When the shite comes down, the US of A is going to be really mad and is probably going to look to take it out on someone....kinda like Iraq and Afghanistan after 9/11. Gotta blame somebody, right? After all, we're the good guys! The Chinese are not an unlikely target of that wrath.
If you were the Chinese, wouldn't you be just as cautious, and resort to as much spying as you could get away with? Looks like a good defensive strategy to me.
Oh and yeah, what business would the USA have intervening in a war between Taiwan and the mainland? No legitimate US interests there...
