Just following orders Herr Commandant.

I think most in the military will follow orders. So it depends on whose orders they get.

If we have a revolution, then I would expect a high percentage in the military to regard the rebels as the enemy, and have no problem in shooting them.

If we have a civil war where States try to go their separate ways, then I would expect the military to split somewhat, so that former military comrades become enemies.

How the military reacts will also depend on whether the federal government can even pay them. If the federal government manages to blow up the money supply so that those in the military are not getting paid with something that has value, then loyalties might easily be broken.

You can't assume that living conditions when the violence breaks out will be the same as yesterday or today, because it will be much more extreme conditions that will actually cause the violence to erupt.

"Bend over and grab your ankles" should be etched in stone at the entrance to every government building and every government office.
