I was one of those kids.

It is up to the parent(s) to raise their children proper and discourage that type of decision.

I personally discouraged my two step sons from joining, one wanted to go to West Point the other to the Naval Academy. I showed them some videos of what some of the soldiers come back like. Brain dead, limbs missing, colostomy bags, etc. My youngest son is probably as close to a conscientious objector as you can get.

But none of that happens without careful and consistent parenting. They need to make mistakes to learn but a parents MAIN job is to prevent the life long altering/ending mistakes like joining the military.
