I was once eastbound on I-10 out of LA. The pre-705 traffic jam had started a couple of miles sooner than usual; when I got to the interchange, there was a car stalled half-off the
freeway. There happened to be a nice paved plaza there, so I pulled off, and the poor guy in the stalled car and I pushed the car up onto that plaza, out of the right-of-way. There was a kindly tractor-trailer driver watching the whole thing, and when I ran to my car and pulled back out, he held my way clear.
Naturally, the traffic stream speeded up by about 33-50 percent (three lanes vs. two + no bottleneck). I felt good. :-)
