Comment: War on Computing (SOPA is just the warmup)
War on Computing (SOPA is just the warmup)
Cory Doctorow: The coming war on general computation
Cory Doctorow talks about the upcoming threats to liberty Ron Paul might talk about if Ron Paul were much more knowledgeable about technology.
The talk is about:
1. How the common denominator of SOPA and other such laws is an ignorant attempt to limit general purpose computing and networks (by people who don't have any idea what "turing complete" means).
2. How things are going to get much worse. Currently it's only the entertainment industry that is pushing for these laws. But soon, it will be many large industries, e.g., trying to prevent us from using 3D printers to print off objects they have IP rights on, or the government trying to prevent us from printing off illegal gun parts (full-auto conversion kits).
3. The danger that all computing platforms will be locked down so only government-approved software can be run. (Say bye bye to open source and any pretense of privacy.)
