Devil's advocate here in the interest of understanding, learning, and improving our tactics within the system: The old guard, status quo Republicans (note my lack of the less flattering label Neocon) were making the point that they were just following the rules, and that to have an orderly process you need SOME sort of process/rules to follow. Yes, the rules to which they were referring were serving their interest, but as such, a motion was made and voted on, and luckily in this case it allowed more people to participate in the process. These days the phrase, "more people to participate in the process", means essentially, "defenders of individual liberty to participate in the process".
