When the hell did doctors become afraid of iodine?

They learn in premed biology that iodine is a necessary component of triiodothyronine and thyroxin. This is basic endocrinology, and you won't get past the MCAT, let alone earn a doctorate, if you don't understand the metabolic pathways of halogens.
