Because the original Greek word used in that verse more correctly translates to "stick under" or "stick into" rather than "mark."

Interesting that not until very modern times, was this even technically possible.

However, a tattoo if I understand it correctly might also fit this translation since the ink is technically under the top layer of skin.

Not every verse should be read literally, but not everyone should be read figuratively either. Context is most important here.

If the "mark" in whatever form will be required in order to "buy or sell" then it obviously must be a physical mark of some type and not merely the esoteric or figurative "not following Christ" version as you point out.

If Christians are singled out as a group and somehow shunned entirely from society, they must be identified in some physical fashion. That requires an actual "mark."
