The story refers to Blue Dog Democrats...

... not Blue Republicans.

A "Blue Dog Democrat" is a conservative Democrat (usually a traditional white Southern Democrat). They are becoming extinct because conservative whites are now almost entirely Republican (although there are still many conservative blacks and hispanics who are Democrats).

A "Blue Republican" is recently coined phrase that refers to a Democrat or Independent (usually liberal) who registers Republican in order to vote or caucus for Dr. Paul. They exist in "Republican only" states (closed primary or closed caucus) because of the need to be Republican to be able to participate. Unlike Blue Dog Democrats, Blue Republicans tend to be from the Pacific Coast and other left-leaning regions; a recent manifestation of Blue Republican support was the thousands (between 1000 and 8500 -- estimates varied widely) who turned out to hear Dr. Paul speak at Cal-Berkeley.

As I understand it, Blue Republicans tend be drawn to support Dr. Paul because of the anti-war, pro-civil liberties, and anti-drug war elements of his platform. Blue Republicans are especially important to the Paul campaign's success in areas with few "Red" (traditional conservative) Republicans. Paul forces have already swept Legislative District Conventions in Seattle with help from Blue Republicans; if we succeed in winning Congressional District delegates in places like San Francisco and Los Angeles, Blue Republicans will likely make a critical difference.

The fact that Dr. Paul motivates liberal Democrats to register as Republicans to support him testifies to the broad appeal of his message. I welcome them as an important part of the Liberty movement. Find out more at: http://www.bluerepublican.org/
