CA GOP won't allow "no party preference" presidential voters

I am looking into changing my political party so I may vote in the presidential primary here in California if Dr. Paul wins the nomination.

At this point it is my understanding registering as a "NPP"
or "no party preference" will not allow me to place a vote on the Republican ballot. (http://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/npp.htm) and my concern is that if Dr. Paul doesn't get the nomination, will I be locked into having to place my primary presidential vote on the Republican ticket?

I believe there is a May 23rd deadline before the primary to state you party preference but I am not positive. Can anyone clarify this situation for me?

Thanks
