However, the young man 'could' have said "Sir" each time he addressed him...

AND here I go again with something "Mother said"...may need to start a "Mother Said" Blog: "Don't ever let someone bring you DOWN to his/her level..."

AND I've found that saying "I just appreciate the fact that Ron Paul is Not for Sale..." is a comment which always makes the other person pause... And often entirely changes the tone of the conversation. So does speaking of his bringing such diverse groups together...
