A troll lurks under bridges and waits in concealment to ambush travelers as they cross the bridge. In internet terminology, a troll lurks undercover within a forum to attack legitimate users of the site. In political terms, a troll seeks to subvert the cause by ambushing new converts and seekers of information with disinformation, the goal is to harm the cause.

But I agree with you. The libel of "troll" is used too loosely and indiscriminately.
