It's Obvious

There are two main reasons they do so:

1. If pot and alcohol were both legal, then when politicians are looking for the next thing to outlaw, they might choose alcohol as being the more harmful. Big alcohol wants to keep that from happening.

2. When any big corporation looks around for ways to create their public image, they look for causes that reflect well on them in a way that counterbalances any perceptions they want to change. What better than opposing drugs as a way to show how socially responsible they are?

3. They fear that people will turn to pot instead of alcohol for their anxiety-reducing self-medication.

Actually, maybe #3 is the real reason, and #1 and #2 is what they use to justify it, intellectually.
