I trust that Rand's first concern is the influence of the libertarian wing of the party. I think he's working with some slimy but useful people (DeMint, Palin) to bring that wing to the core of the party. I think that's why Santorum is freaking out; he knows his brand of Republican is rapidly losing influence (even among evangelicals). The influence he had this time was 50% attributable to people hating Romney (hence them waiting six months to finally go with Santorum) and 50% attributable to Santorum's adopting some strong limited government rhetoric.
My guess is that an evangelical type will never lead the party again unless he or she is a strong debt hawk and proponent of shrinking the federal government's role even in social issues.
