that's easy:

-we can't have free elections, using those machines.
Forget about open source, and transparent, and all of that.
If the results have to be processed on a digital computer, and when the general public has no comprehension (let alone Federal and State Election staff), of just how truly vulnerable these systems are (it does not help that the machines in use are programmed by persons who should have chosen another career), then the results will be...well...the results will be what we have now, which is a complete joke of an election system.
The only solution is paper ballots.
No need to fix what wasn't broken (and they can keep the machines around for those that need them and remain compliant with that stupid federal HAVA law).
