Employers roll over because they don't want the hassle of contesting on your behalf. So in that regard you may not have 'choice'. Being self employed makes this much easier, but even more helpful is living off the grid. I own my home and property free and clear, and owe nothing at the bank. I live a modest life that doesn't require a great deal of income (federal reserve notes) to sustain that life style. Grow my own food, a little barter, etc. I live within my means. Financially secure doesn't necessarily have to mean "rich".
