California is traditionally about 10 years ahead of the other states.
We have a big enough population and economy to serve as a canary in the coal mine (losing population, going bankrupt, etc.) and, yet, we were the frontier (only thing left is floating countries, and the moon), so we have lots of independents and immigrants seeking oportunity and freedom, and the creativity that brings.
We legalized medical marijuana quite some time ago.
It's too bad they just did away with any chance of allowing alternative parties to compete in campaigns by eliminating them in the "primary." Hopefully the lawsuit will overturn that problem.
