I find that more people on the right see gay marriage as a

religious issue more than a political one, but you are right when you say that giving government the ability of force on social issues always comes back around to bite one side or the other in the arse. My argument to the religious right who are against gay marriage based on religious reasoning is to question whether adultery or gay marriage is the greater sin in the eyes of God, where on gods chart of sins do each fall? If no man is free from sin God looks upon such equally and so should they, yet they do not persecute one for committing adultery against their spouse. This is more proof positive that the issue in and of itself is nothing more than aa tool used to divide people over non issues, when it is the economy hidden up their sleeve. I think this is why the bible says not to judge another, because in reality to swear, lust, or to commit adultery is equal to having homosexual sex so far as the bible says, and God forgives all sins, but the Christians certainly do not. In the end this has been the downfall of our legal system, groups commanding what is moral versus what the constitution and rule of law say. This has led to victim-less crimes and penalties which can end the hopes and dreams of a young person for simply making a mistake, and the moral majority always stands behind the decision of the bench, for if it were not for the judicial branch and the court system they could not push their personal moral idealism, while most of the time the most heinous of violent crimes come from the church (Catholics raping boys) or drug abuse and prostitution (Haggard), yet most are forgiven if they play the role and beg for forgiveness, but a different set of rules apply to the non-religious among us. I am by no means attacking religion, just stating provable fact for discussion. You cannot legislate morality, or you end up with huge numbers of citizens incarcerated for profit, and heaven knows the power structure in the U.S. would never allow this to occur. /sarcasm off
