The Sheriff did it to impress the Nurse, not because it was the right thing to do.
He tricked the old farmer by appealing to his want of fame.
The nurse wanted to get 100% on her assignment.
Those that were on the Nurses' side rooted for the nurse. Those that thought the farmer was right in the first place, thought him foolish to give his permission.
It's a stage play, not an altar to worship. Get a grip.
