I think that this is such a hot button issue because of the double standard that exists in school systems when it comes to what they teach as science. Aspects of evolution that are directly observable are true within species, but there is a huge double standard in that a large part of what's called evolution is based on imaginings yet assumed to be true by students (whence so many people claiming to 'believe in evolution'. What does that even mean because it's such a huge umbrella? I, personally, would prefer that only the observable be taught in science class. I trust aspects of the science establishment about as much as I trust the government, everyone's got biased agendas.
