I did read that the Higgs is so unstable that the only way to detect it is by trying to read the signs after it has decayed. So in that essence, you are right. What the scientists have detected are the footprints indicating the foot, and not the foot itself. And then it still needs to be determined if that foot has the properties of the Higgs.
