The founders believed that

The founders believed that our rights exist because we exist, because of our humanity.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator

I believe this specific wording is directly intentional. They could have easily used "their God" rather than "their Creator."

"Their Creator" is referring to whatever it is that each of the "all men" believe is "their" Creator. It doesn't even need to necessarily be God but whatever each individual believes.

Anyhow, the IMPORTANCE of this is that our rights are NOT given to us by government AND that our rights are given to us by a force far more powerful than the government. No government and no army is powerful enough to take away that which (the vast majority of people believe) is endowed by a Creator/God.

Adding on to that, this very well may be the reason why in the early days religion was very much integrated into the government, in all the schools, courts & other gov buildings. And might also be the reason why government has been so aggressive in removing that integration of religion into government.
