NASA is...

...the Amtrak of space. Ten years from now we'll all be traveling outside the atmosphere on Richard Branson's Virgin space jets. Look at all of the failures of NASA. Really? Went to the moon ONCE in over 40 years? We're just now sending remote control cars to Mars? The real innovation is created by one with passion, whether that passion is for the love and curiosity of the thing, or one that has passion for gain and wealth willing to invest(risk) in an idea that works- sometimes it's the same person. If private companies weren't finally 'allowed' by governments to launch communication satellites at a far less cost than NASA, we'd all still be tethered to land lines. Regardless of what drives you, the market almost always creates a benefit to society. Space exploration/utilization will be one of those benefits most suited for the free market.
