I know it's not popular

and no one will be convinced by the argument, but the market doesn't significantly fund space exploration right now because it is extremely inefficient. It is a huge black hole of money which largely returns only "we got there first" nationalistic cheers. Getting there first is not an efficient use of capital unless we can claim the resources or win a prize. If people want to get together and fund these feel good moments, they can do just that. If they see a way to make money at it, they can take the risk and reap the rewards but I just don't think our government should be putting one dime into space exploration. I know that people will say that it furthers science, the children are interested, the astronauts are heroes....etc, etc, etc, etc. I say that if you want to go into space, do it on your own dime.
