You're assuming that the only motives of private persons is profit, and that a free society will devote no resources to unprofitable activities, such as space exploration for the sake of pure curiosity. But that's a demonstrably false assumption. All kinds of unprofitable activities are pursued in civil society without the aid of the State, from charitable activities to scientific research to art.

It's as simple as this: if members of society want to do X badly enough, they will get together and do it. If enough people are interested in space exploration, they will put up the money to do it. If not, not.

I'm a big fan of space exploration myself, and a big opponent of NASA.
