The Russian Revolution was sparked when people in St. Petersburg could not get bread. Resources had been sent to the front lines (WW1) and the people had nothing.

Marie Antoinette was reported to have been told that the peasants had no bread to eat. To which she supposedly responded "Then let them eat..cake." (The story is not true of course.)

But due to technology we still have cheap things to stuff our gullets with.

Seems you need hunger pains to start a revolution.
