The attack ads work, because the media picks up on them and amplifies the effect. Often a cheap 30 second web ad gets parlayed into hours of sympathetic free air time. Of course the media will only care about your web ads if you poll somewhere near the top of the pack. Of course you'll only poll near the top of the pack if everyone knows your name early in the game. It is how the whole game works to keep establishment folks in power i.e. name recognition begets good early poll numbers, which begets "credibility" and fundraising which begets organization and free media as a legitimate contender. Know the cycle, and use it to our advantage. This is why the ubiquitous campaign sign is so important.
