Burden of proof

As a physician I would have to say that an involuntary emergency admission or an IEA is a pretty strict process. A mental professional has to fully evaluate and a physician has to examine the accused patient in a controlled setting in an ER room within a specified hours of forced detention to medically certify that he/she is presenting "IMMINENT" danger to society. This usually means he has to make repeated threats or shows a plan for suicide or homicidal action against a specific identified person. If he is lucid and NOT endorsing those thoughts, he CAN NOT be detained beyond first 1-2 hours in ER. So what happened can not be justified on medical, psychological grounds at all.
