I wonder if it was Gilbert
I wonder if it was Gilbert that said that to them then. He represents himself as being a lawyer on behalf of the campaign. He even went so far as saying that they were going to take over the campaign. It wouldn't even surprise me if he is the one to have threatened them with no votes.
