Well, I was referencing the election of 1968, not
the election of 1972 when McGovern was the Democratic nominee. Hubert Humphrey did not support an immediate withdrawal from Vietnam, which resulted in the riot outside the DNC convention in '68. George Wallace was the only candidate on the ballot in '68 who supported an immediate withdrawal of all troops from Vietnam if on the moment he took office it looked like it would not be "winnable within thirty days."
McGovern was a big government, pro-welfare guy who was atrocious on domestic issues. It wouldn't have made a whole lot of difference in Vietnam if McGovern had won in '72 because as soon as Nixon won the election, in January of '73, he agreed to bring the rest of the troops home.
