Same with Mussolini. Many faux intellectuals in the 1920'-30's US fell head over heels for these guys because they appeared to solve social and economic Gordian knots by dispensing with slow and ponderous representational government, debates, and human liberties and using raw power to "get things done". FDR did pretty much the same, only at a slightly lower intensity.

In the short term, the radical changes they made were impressive, but in the long run hallow and fraught with hazards. Add the pomp and ceremony these tyrants put to all their endeavors, and many swooned at the display while missing what was really going on.One only has to look at the commercial branding of Obama for his 2008 campaign to see things have not changed very much at all.
