Pleased as Punch

Punch was (and is) a puppet, a character in a children's play. He is contemptuous of all authority, to such an extent that he even beats the constable with his slapstick. When the devil and the hangman Jack Ketch come to get him, he does the same to them. Whap, whap, whap! He is always so pleased with himself that he cries out, "That's the way to do it!"
