Give up liberty to save liberty?
How about we work for liberty every day in every way?
That way a single personality is just one individual among many.
No single point of failure.
Ron Paul showed us that this approach is viable in modern politics. I don't recall any other candidate in recent US history pulling this off or even being interested in pulling it off.
Principle over personality.
A principle can't contradict itself but a personality can betray a principle. Peter and Judas are two famous examples.
