Edit: Perhaps you mean less work (an assumption), not knowledge. Knowledge is not the same thing as work. Every town blacksmith could make potentially make a gun barrel at one time. Things are easier today with modern machine shop tools.

Guns are not high tech items. They were originally crafted.
