Maybe the choice "not to vote" is WHY it is still timely.

Voting and using the system of law is the last bastion against anarchy and "frontier justice". I agree with Gandhi and will paraphrase, "If I must choose between cowardice and violence, I will choice violence but it will be the LEAST amount of violence to accomplish my goal."

According to Webster, this is also "violence".

a : intense, turbulent, or furious and often destructive action or force
b : vehement feeling or expression : fervor; also : an instance of such action or feeling
c : a clashing or jarring quality : discordance

So you so, voting and political or social activism is also a form of violence. For me, the most effective "act of violence" I can commit is to actively support Gary Johnson, as this is the most effective form of "violence" to "send a message" to the "powers that be".
