Has been great fun for me. Had a bit of an insect problem last year, so I got some Mantis eggs and the Mantises have been amusing thus far as well.

Maybe a small Aquaponics system ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tea8knevRQI&feature=fvwrel ) might be something for you to look into. I don't see why it couldn't be inside with proper lighting. By the way the linked vid may not be the best explanation, I have no idea. I posted it simply because the size of it was not huge for an example.

Many things you can do with some 5 gallon buckets.
