The Statist argument for government action is "we need the government to do it, we know best"
Government usually does it in a way that becomes corruptible and expensive (by raising compliance costs, cost of produced goods, regulatory budgets to monitor, class action and frivolous law suits relating to violations that harm small producers)and doesn't achieve the desired result and indeed often brings about the opposite results.
