But most people don't want to "play the market."
The best solution for most people is to diversify assets. Don't rely on the stock market, but don't ignore it, either.
Diversify assets among: equity, debt, real money, fiat money. Which means: stocks, bonds, gold, cash.
Each year, rebalance the portfolio. Such a portfolio has averaged over 7% per year since currencies started to float and the gold standard was killed. And in 40 years or so, there have only been 2 or 3 minor losing years.
Very solid strategy.
