Another perspective.

Many years ago I asked the question "what constitutes fitness for survival today?" The answer that came about in due course was a teleological one. This is based upon the idea that there is a design and purpose in the universe that is moving towards realisation. This intuition was confirmed in the books by the Jesuit priest and paleontologist, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin: "The Phenomenon of Man" and "The Future of Man".

The work of the Swiss psychoanalyst Carl Jung introduced me to the archetypes of the collective unconscious and the central Archetype that controlled all other archetypes he called the imago Dei, the image of God. At the centre of each individual unconscious mind was a replication of this central Archetype, the image of an image.

This then linked with the gospel of the apostle John (I was not a Christian at this time) chapter 1 verses 1-5:

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was fully God. The Word was with God in the beginning. All things were created by him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created. In him was life, and the life was the light of mankind. And the light shines on in the darkness, but the darkness has not mastered it."

The Word or Logos is of course the Jungian central Archetype. The apostle chose this description because it connected the Greek mind with the Logos of their Stoic philosophers and the Hellenistic Jewish mind with the Logos of the Jewish philosopher Philo.

This Word is the source of our Light, our collective and individual intelligence. The darkness is the natural human mind that is infused with the Light through inspiration but cannot grasp it. To assert that we are becoming less intelligent would mean that we are falling farther away from the Light. This has been the condition of mankind since the beginning. We are in a state of entropy as is the entire material universe of which we are an integral part.

There is however another process underway in the opposite direction. This is the gathering together of the spirits of mankind towards the Light so that as we draw nearer, as we receive Him, for the Light and Life are a Person, we are changed from the realm of darkness into the realm of Light, Life and Love, the Kingdom of God which is righteousness, joy and peace in the Holy Spirit. From a personal experiential perspective this means that our mind, emotions, desires and will are changed as we learn and follow the leading of the Spirit of Truth and Life that is now in union with our spirit. The final destination is for each of us to be changed in the very atomic structure of our bodies and to receive an immortal body just like Jesus' immortal, incorruptible body after His resurrection.

This was the complete answer that I received to my question "what constitutes fitness for survival today?"

The fact is none of us shall survive in our present form. This form is destined to perish just as the entire universe in its present form is destined to perish. When we identify with that which is temporary and passing away then our consciousness of who we are will perish since that persona cannot survive.

"Jesus answered them: 'Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.'" (John 8:34-36)
