Alabama is lovely state. But for someone from New York looking to relocate, I would recommend the suburb and more rural outskirts of Atlanta, GA unless you don't really need to be close to any urban area.
Southeast of Atlanta, Conyers or Covington and surrounding areas is a nice place to raise a family and the price of homes right now with all of the foreclosures is pretty good.
There's a lot more I could say if I weren't so tired right now.
