Of course God doesn't need genealogical records to know who are the physical descendants of Abraham, but man surely would need them to know and God knows that man would need them if they actually still mattered.

Nothing is done without God's will and those records were destroyed for a reason -- they no longer mattered! Again I refer you to Galatians 3, which EXPLAINS Genesis 12:3:

GALATIANS 3:16 "The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. Scripture does not say 'and to seeds,' meaning many people, but 'and to your seed,' meaning one person, who is Christ."

GALATIANS 3:29) "If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise."

(btw, the promise is eternal life in the true Promised Land, not title to a strip of land in the Middle East, which was a type and shadow of the Promised Land)
