I wonder whether it was simply socioeconomic status, or was it due to "antiquated" beliefs about the world? The reason I say that is because they are likely the oldest race of people in the world. It follows by logic that they may have held the oldest belief systems.
Sometimes it seems to me that the amount of technological progress a society experiences is inversely proportional to how much they are rooted in tradition. Of course, this says nothing about their happiness (which IMO is more important).
