People are basically good, despite beliefs to the contrary. A small percentage have no conscience and will do what they can to oppress others through the idea that if others succeed around them that that will harm the oppressor's survival. This causes about a fifth of a cross section of humanity to act like that small number of oppressors.
When you have a conscience and come to the realization that you are harming other people (despite previous indoctrination to the contrary) on a huge scale, suicide would be a solution that is likely to occur in proportion to the perceived harm one is doing.
