Because

Many people tend to categorize information in little imaginary boxes to compare and contrast against other imaginary little boxes and deem these boxes "isms".

That sort of thought process, while generally effective and efficient, oftentimes makes one lose sight of the finer details of a given piece of information.

It all boils down to laziness IMO.

Although, I've seen a few people frame the debate as "collectivism versus individualism", but not often enough.
