Or it may be a front for something much better.

When Jacob fought the man at the Jabbok he thought he was fighting his nemesis Esau. When he realised he was fighting God (Peniel means the face of God) he asked for and received His blessing. This is when he became Israel, the one in whom God rules.

When he next met Esau he said to him "Now that I have seen your face and you have accepted me, it is as if I have seen the face of God. (Genesis 33:10) Jacob had at last received the revelation of the sovereignty of God.

This agrees with the Revelation 17:17 "For God has put into their minds to carry out his purpose by making a decision to give their royal power to the beast until the words of God are fulfilled."

As scripture says:

Psalm 76:10 "Surely the wrath of man shall praise you;the remnant of wrath you will put on like a belt."

Deuteronomy 7:21 "You shall not be in dread of them, for the Lord your God is in your midst, a great and awesome God."

We tend to major on the power of the beast when the beast is merely the instrument of God to carry out His will. Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know what I have planned for you," says the Lord. "I have plans to prosper you, not to harm you. I have plans to give you a future filled with hope."

"Jesus answered them: 'Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.'" (John 8:34-36)
