That's all true, though I must respectfully disagree on one part. Christianity (or insert religeon here:) has everything to do with it. A brain attuned to faith is the soil in which such irrational ideas are able to take root in otherwise rational minds. The guilt/fear/obediance which prevent criticle thinking and questioning on subjects presented by trusted voices when concerning matters of the faith. mechanisms pounded into young faith-drenched minds are what allow these ideas to bypass reason and our natural aversion to mass institutionalized evil.

If they did not conduct a large part of their life without need of reason, proof or rational morality, they would not have fallen for this and would thusly not be complacent and party responsable for horrific evil and mass murder.
